Project #2Big Trees
|
Exhibition TextBig Trees is connected to a American artist who created woodblock printing works where he was able to illustrate. In which this project I will demonstrate how I was inspired to create a work of which I wanted to connect to his work to mine. Thereof I will also show the aspects of how I can connect his work to mine and how I connected it to my work.

Inspiration
For my inspiration I was able to find some of the works of the American artists William S. Rice, he was well known to create woodblock prints and block printing. I chose these two artworks that were made by William S. Rice which were Night-Yosemite and Marsh Moon these were two of the artworks that were a few of my inspiration for my project. I was able to connect this to my project because of how I did a block print and related the image to mine and the artists.

Another artwork that I chose as my inspiration was another famous art work for my inspiration was a wood print artwork that he made and was called Monterrey Palms. I found this work to be an inspiration for me to connect to my piece of work, however this was another artwork of his that I found to be very unique compared to the others because of how depth he went into this piece of art.

Planning
Throughout my planning process I was able to create a drawing of which I was very inspired by my inspiration artist and his work, this then allowed me to make something similar to his work but firstly create it in a drawing form and then be able to transfer that into a block print. I was able to add more things into the sketch but however I felt that if I only drew the tree itself it would have looked too simple and without detail and no background objects. In the end, I was pretty satisfied with the outcome and how it looked so I felt that with the moon and the stars it matched the type of image I was going for.
|
Moving into coping the tree into this small sheet of transparent paper I was aware that not everything would appear in the paper so I decided to go with the tree on itself. I was able to put the paper over my sketch and recreate the image on the little paper, therefore I then made sure to press down on the paper for the pencil mark to go through the paper so it would appear on the other side.
|
Techniques/Process
After being able to fully sketch the whole tree on the paper, I then took the paper and place it on the top of the block print and made sure that the sketched out part of the paper was on the top of the block print itself. Therefore, I then took my roller and rolled it back and forth on top so the marks would perfectly go through the paper onto the block print. To a conclusion I was able to find this as a good technique in order to start carving onto the block and continue with my process.
|
After getting the right amount of pencil marks on my block print I was then able to start carving and making sure that I got a significant amount of carvings on the block print so the image that I wanted would appear when I used ink on the block print. After starting to add ink on the block print I saw that there was multiple ways to get the right texture when rolling back and forth and I was able to make sure to get the right texture when using the roller.

Reflection
Finalizing my project, I am able to say that I do certainly like the outcome of my piece but if there was something that I could have done much better it would most likely be to add more to the image itself if it were bigger and if I had more product to work with. However, there was some parts of this project that I can say that I am very happy with such as how I was able to perfectly carve the block print out and how much detail it looks from just looking at this image or the piece itself. Although I did not have enough space for the whole image I am satisfied with the sketch drawing that I had previously made.

ACT Responses
1) Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
I can explain and describe how my artwork does have a cause and effect when I connected it to my artwork this is shown through the techniques, sketch, color and appearance of how my inspiration was able to make me create something similar to my work.
2) What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The overall approach of the author regarding the topic for my inspiration would be that I was not necessarily trying to imitate the same image as my inspiration but trying to get something out of my inspiration and making it as my own in my own sort of idea so I can have that ideal conclusion.
3) What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
The kind of generalizations and conclusion I was able to discover about ideas, people, cultures while being able to research is that I found out that there is more abroad artist found in the areas of European compared to the U.S.
4) What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
My central idea of theme around my inspirational research would be based upon the different type of art cultures in the eyes of how every artist works and thinks different.
5) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
I was able to inference that I would not be able to find a artist that would have the type of work that I wanted to work with but I was successfully able to find someone like that.
