Project #1
The Butterfly Effect
|
Exhibition TextThe Butterfly Effect is connected to a Cubism theme in which I was able to connect to this theme by using butterflies. The amount of color and difference between each of these butterflies can depict how the tone of each of them go from light to dark from one side to another. However I wanted to connect to the form of Cubism by one of the well known artists Picasso in which I will be going in depth and describing the type of artwork I intended to connect to and how I was able to connect to it.
|
InspirationDuring my research I was able to find Cubism a way for me to connect my art piece. I connected the two most well known artist Picasso and Braque who are considered to be the primary creators of the Cubist movement and artistic theory. With that being said Analytic Cubism comes to play where in this phase of Cubism artworks were focused in shattering objects and ways for their work to not only be simply be one figure itself but spreading objects around the canvas to make the image collage with the amount of figures, colors and forms in the painting.

Although Picasso and Braque had their unique ways of creating their analytic cubist works, I wanted to connect my artwork to this theme. I am able to do this by showing how and where I can show connection from their pieces to my work. I will be explaining where and how I was able to connect to these works of art, I can say that the technique I used did work in my part and I was satisfied with the outcome and I am able to express where I was able to find this connection.

Planning
Throughout my process I took a step by step look into how exactly I was able to make my butterfly figure and exactly how much shading it needed so it was able to pop out. The techniques I used during this process was being able to keep my pencil sideways for me to get the correct shading and being able to get that dark tone into the butterfly.
I was aware of leaving open space inside of the butterfly so I knew exactly where it is that I needed to paint when I transferred this onto my canvas. |
Continuing my process, I decided to create a light yellow color by blending colors. In this case I was able to blend a titanium white with a primary yellow color to create a bright yellow that will not only brighten the whole canvas itself but it will allow the figures in the canvas to pop out with a dark color. This not only made it better because of the contrast with yellow and black but also the color patterns that will be used within each butterfly in the canvas.

Techniques
Using techniques for this project came into play when I needed to start painting the butterfly figures. I came across that the first times I went through outlining the figures I thought they were too thin and there were various of yellow spots which were pretty noticeable. However, I was able to go back with a thin brush and create the outlines much thicker and added more black so the yellow wouldn't go through. I figured that this technique really helped me out a lot and came to a conclusion that really increased the overall view of the butterflies.
|
After I was able to fix the outlines, I needed to outline the inside of each butterfly so I was able to start painting and adding color, personally I found this part of the project really fun and nice to do. Some of the techniques that I came up with was using a lamp and putting the small piece of paper with the sketch drawn on the back of the canvas while the lamp lighting behind the canvas and tracing the sketch. There was a few things that were hard to do but I was able to come across this and being successful in this technique.

ExperimentationWhile creating my piece I was able to make a blending color for 3 of the 8 butterflies. I found it really interesting how I was able to have a bright colored background and being able to make each of these colors pop out. Some of the colors I started blending were primary yellow with titanium white, which ended up being the background of a bright yellow. For the butterfly in the center I was able to use titanium white with a primary blue which I got a sky blue hue. I was able to use two completely different blues in which you can tell the difference of brightness. Lastly the last blending I was able to use was a titanium white with a pink purple hue. I was able to get somewhat the same color after blending but I ended up with a brighter purple which I really enjoyed using. I found this experimentation to be very fun and learned how butterflies not only simply show their colors but also as to how they can be very bright and beautiful just by their colors.

Reflection
Reflecting back to the start and end of this project, I am able to say that I am satisfied with the outcome that i got with this project. I found it to be very calming to do but also with the amount of colors being used, the hues of each of these butterflies really opened out with the yellow background. I can say that I was doubting myself at the start but I gave myself the chance to find ways for me to make the image pop out and make sure that the audience can see the color of each of these butterflies. I was able to identify that the colors at the left side were the darkest compared to the right. I did a pattern from left to right for the colors to brighten up and make sure that they come out of the image.

ACT Responses
1) Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
I am able to explain and describe how there is a cause and effect relationship between my inspiration and artwork when you are trying to find the connection with one another. At the start it was somewhat hard to find but I was able to find ways for it to connect with my inspiration.
2) What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The overall approach goal was met and I am very happy with the outcome and I am glad that I was able to connect to it and be able to create a artwork that i was able to find a connection too.
3) What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I am able to conclude that each of these butterflies have a certain tone to it in which can lead to a much further thought depending on the color which however I found it to be very interesting. This however depends on how the audience sees this artwork piece.
4) What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
My central idea of theme around this inspirational research was focuses in the Analytic Cubism which I found in one of my old sketch books and I really just got into it and tried finding connections to it for me to create and connect.
5) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
Some inferences or conclusions I can make about this was that my inspiration really led me to making some sort of Analytic Cubism piece and for me to be able to find how I can make a piece like this which was not difficult but it was very inspiring because of how these type of art pieces are made.
